Trainer of 2007 Triple Crown Contender Hard Spun Joins Media Thoroughbred Group

Larry Jones is no stranger to the limelight. The media loves the cowboy from Hopkinsville, Kentucky who bases his strings of horses in humble settings such as Ellis Park and Delaware Park. There are no frills and no fancy signs. He is a plain man who feels no need to “spin” the story on Hard Spun. This trainer lets his record and his horse’s record speak for themselves. However, if you ask him, he certainly has opinions about how a horse should be trained and campaigned; and, to Jones, that process starts at the auctions where the yearlings are purchased.

Jones and his daughter, Amanda, were there everyday for the first ten days of the sale, examining horses, taking note, and purchasing for the list of clients which includes Hard Spun’s owners and former Governor Brereton Jones. It was fairly easy to spot Larry Jones during the first few days of the sale: he was the one in the cowboy hat and western shirt. By the middle of the second week, many more cowboy hats arrived on the scene. Jones, however, remained unique…he was the one with the stethoscope around his neck. Carl Nafzger teased Larry at lunch one day saying “Larry took all that money he won from Hard Spun and got a medical degree!” Jones says he listens to the strength of the heartbeat and pays particular attention to the throat and airway when selecting a horse.

Media Thoroughbred Group is proud to announce a partnership with Larry Jones. Apparently, he was not taking new clients when we met; however, we struck up a friendship and a deal. We are very excited to offer a partnership for our clients on a Stormy Atlantic yearling selected and purchased by Larry Jones. She will be broken and trained in South Carolina and then on to Jones for her campaign in 2008.

During the September sale Jones scored another major victory in the Grade 1 Matron for 2-year old fillies at Belmont in New York with a Proud Citizen filly - Proud Spell - owned by Governor Jones. Media Thoroughbred Group purchased a Proud Citizen filly at the Keeneland yearling sale the day after the Matron. We are truly excited to be able to offer our clients a partnership in this filly; and who knows….we could have the next winner of the Belmont Matron!!!!

Not Your Father’s 401K: A Retirement Plan for Thoroughbreds

Media Thoroughbred Group and Old Friends Farm have joined together to provide the first “retirement plan” for thoroughbred horses in the history of racing partnerships. This groundbreaking venture will ensure that all horses partnered by Media Thoroughbred Group have a secure future when their racing, stallion, or broodmare careers are over. Each partnership in existence today and in the future will have a small quarterly “nest egg” set aside for the twilight years. Lisa Lake-Roedemeier, founder and president of Media Thoroughbred Group, says “Michael Blowden, founder of Old Friends Farm, is the creative genius behind this concept. I was just lucky enough to be the recipient of his positive thoughts and ideas. We know that the future of this industry and these wonderful athletes is in our hands. It’s time to walk the talk.”

IN THE “SUPERFECTA” IN 73% OF OUR RACES

Lisa Lake-Roedemeier, the founder and president of this new and innovative thoroughbred racing partnership company, believes that if you can see it in your mind’s eye, you can achieve it. Perhaps that is why this new company is literally “off and running.” Media Thoroughbred Group put a group of partners in the winner’s circle with only the second horse to race in the MTG silks!

From left, Darryl Haire, Interim Director of the Jockey Guild; Edgar Prado, jockey for Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro; Lisa and Andy Jugan, Executive Director of the Greater Louisville Sports Commission.

Founded in February 2005, the company boasts an impressive supporting cast which has included Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and Kenny McPeek, bloodstock agent and trainer who owns over eighty career stakes wins.

Armed with the confidence and determination of a proven businesswoman, Lisa Lake-Roedemeier
plans to put Media Thoroughbred Group in the Kentucky Derby. “We may not win, but we are going to be there,” she tells potential partners, trainers and curious onlookers.” I tell the naysayers to give the Cash is King group (owners of Afleet Alex) or the Funny Cide group in upstate New York a call,” she adds. “They will tell you to follow your dreams. Partnerships are the future of horseracing.”

Why We Are Unique

Media Thoroughbred Group is not a traditional horse partnership company. Our horse selection team is unprecedented. “I do not believe there is one particular person or method for choosing good horses,” says Lake-Roedemeier. That is why she relies on D. Wayne Lukas, Kenny McPeek, Anne Peters, and Randy Trimble, a biomechanical expert who created his own point system for conformation and soundness. Ed Dodwell, owner of Diamond D ranch and nationally acclaimed bloodstock agent and trainer, joined the Media Thoroughbred Group horse selection team in September. Ed has been responsible for sending numerous graded stakes winners to the track and works closely with trainers such as Bob Baffert and Richard Mandella.

Likewise, having been involved in numerous partnerships over the past decade, Lisa has unique ideas about the structure and operation of the partnership, itself. “We will never lose sight of the fact that our partners have trusted us with their money.” That is why Media Thoroughbred Group offers a Claiming Addendum as a standard part of the legal operating agreement. Each horse partnership is operated as a separate limited liability company or general partnership. Owners are not only offered referral and ownership incentives, but also a standard award toward future partnerships if a horse is claimed.

Lisa Lake-Roedemeier was involved in the first all-female partnership, Purse Strings Farms, that won nearly $500,000 with Leo’s Gypsy Dancer. She was recently a partner on a Lost Soldier colt with West Point Thoroughbreds and an admirer of that corporation’s leadership. She believes she has gleaned positive business practices from each partnership experience. She is also an admirer and student of the legendary Cot Campbell, founder of Dogwood Stables. Inspired by a chance meeting with Anne and Cot Campbell while she was reading his book on racing partnerships, Lisa made her vision a reality and met with top turf accountants and equine legal experts to set up Media Thoroughbred Group in February 2005.
